Nigerian users taught me something that Silicon Valley often gets wrong: they don’t want more features - they want the basics to work flawlessly.
While building a mobile money startup in Nigeria, I observed that several users consistently chose agents over our mobile app. The app had a sleek design, advanced functionality, and a smooth interface. Yet, agents won out because they were:
Instant – Transactions happened immediately, no delays.
Reliable – Users knew the service wouldn’t fail them, or they could depend on the agent if it failed.
Predictable – The experience was consistent every time.
In contrast, while feature-rich apps occasionally failed, it was a hassle for users to get reversals. A dropped connection, a slow load time, or a crash during a critical transaction was enough to erode trust. In emerging markets like Nigeria, where financial transactions are often tied to daily necessities, users have zero tolerance for failure. If your app falters, they’ll switch to a competitor—or revert to traditional methods like mobile money agents—without a second thought.
This experience revealed a critical lesson for founders: trust is built through consistency, not features. In markets where access to technology is already a hurdle, users prioritise speed, uptime, and reliability over flashy add-ons. A beautifully designed app with cutting-edge features means little if it can’t deliver when it matters most. Before chasing the next significant innovation, ensure your core experience is bulletproof. Optimise for performance, eliminate bugs, and prioritise uptime—because in emerging markets, these fundamentals are what win loyalty
For example, we found that rural users valued the ability to send money instantly to family members or pay for goods without worrying about app crashes. By streamlining any app’s core transaction flow—ensuring it was fast, stable, and intuitive—you will begin to gain user trust. A mobile money operator presently has the trust of customers in this segment because of this singular feature. Only then do additional features, like budgeting tools or loyalty rewards, start to add value rather than complexity.
This principle extends beyond Nigeria. Across emerging markets, where infrastructure challenges like spotty internet or power outages are common, reliability is the currency of trust. Founders who obsess over uptime percentages and seamless user experiences will outshine those chasing feature bloat.
